FORT HAYS UNIVERSITY TECHNOLOGY FAIR
The Hoxie Junior and Senior High Woodworking students had the opportunity to display their work at the FHSU Technology Fair April 27. Hoxie submitted one hundred- forty- nine projects to the Fair where they were judged on difficulty, craftsmanship, and overall appearance.
The seventh graders took 65 total projects including clipboards, salt and pepper shaker/napkin holders, mantel clocks, and world globe desk sets. They received a total of 53 red ribbons representing excellent projects and 12 blue ribbons representing superior projects.
The eighth graders sent a combination of 70 projects which included glass etchings, super clips, bottle lamps, wooden whistles, and post office door banks with a 3 D print keychain. These projects received 32 red ribbons and 38 blue ribbons.
Five Hoxie High School students participated in the problem-solving competition at the Fair. Senior Landon Heim, and juniors Colton Heskett, Jarrod Dible, Jake Geisinger, and Matt Dierks were tasked to design and build a vehicle that would be powered with the use of a box fan to travel in a straight line. They were given supplies such as paper cups, masking tape, a piece of paper. Along with the vehicle, they had to make a drawing of the project and explain the procedure of how it would solve the problem. This team was awarded a third place plaque for their efforts.
The high school students exhibited fourteen of their projects in the Fair. All of these students received blue ribbons on their projects. Nine of the fourteen projects also received medals for their outstanding quality. Freshman Gabe Friess was awarded a blue ribbon on his headboard and jewelry box, and bowl. He also received a medal on his bowl. Freshman Kody Cousins received blue ribbons on his jewelry box and night stand and also was awarded a medal on his nightstand.
Sophomore Nick Munk received a blue ribbon and medal on his oak end table. Junior Valdemar Rubio was awarded a blue ribbon on his oak storage cabinet. Junior Taye Washington received a blue ribbon and medal on his triple dresser. Senior Justin Weese received a blue ribbon for his oak cedar chest. Junior Jarrod Dible brought home a blue ribbon and medal on his walnut armoire display. Junior Jake Geisinger designed and engineered the making of an oak gaming table with walnut inlays which was awarded a blue ribbon and medal. Junior Colton Heskett designed and built a walnut triple dresser with swivel mirrors and a knick-knack box which was awarded a blue ribbon and medal as well as being selected the Outstanding 2018 Junior Project.
Senior Landon Heim designed and constructed an oak double dresser with a bookcase mirror top which received a blue ribbon and medal. Senior Zack Sherman entered an oak triple dresser. He was also awarded a blue ribbon and medal. These two projects were in contention for the Outstanding 2018 Senior Project. At the final judging, Zack Sherman’s triple dresser received the award. He was also selected to receive the Ed Davis Outstanding Project 2018 award.
Hoxie High School was selected the recipient of the Ross Beach Award recognizing the outstanding program of the year. These students have worked hard to achieving this award and Mr. Kaufman
