Hoxie’s own Diane Pratt demonstrated how to do “acrylic pours” as a guest artist in Mrs. Jackie Campbell’s 7-12 art classes on Wednesday, Sept. 26. Acrylic pours, also known as fluid art, is a trendy new way of creating an abstract painting. Diane has been providing workshops on acrylic pours throughout the area over the last several months. She said the most time-consuming part is mixing the paint. Diane explained it this way, “It’s like getting ready for the Thanksgiving meal; there’s a lot of prep, figuring out what you’re having, buying the needed food, prepping the food and cooking it - will take you days. Then when you sit down to eat it, it takes you 15-20 minutes to eat it all up.”
Half of the class time was preparing the paint. Once the paint was mixed came the pouring portion. Diane demonstrated several different methods to the kids, ribbon pour, dirty pour, and tree ring pour. Then it was the high school students’ turn to try it out. “There wasn’t an ugly one in the bunch: they all were beautiful!” art instructor Jackie Campbell said about the students’ artwork. Many of the students said that they enjoyed the lesson very much and wish to do more acrylic pours in the future.
