EIGHTH GRADE WINS OAKLEY SCHOLARS BOWL TOURNEY
Hoxie’s Eighth Grade Team placed first at the Oakley Middle School Invitational Scholars’ Bowl Tournament on Feb. 9. This was their first tournament of the year. The team participants were: Matt Diercks, Sam Bretz, Sean Robben, Jake Geisinger, and Abby Depenbusch.
The meet was a seven team round robin tournament. The schools that were invited were Scott City, Quinter, Colby, Goodland, Sharon Springs, Oakley, and Hoxie. (Oberlin brought a 7th grade team.) Hoxie started out losing in the first round to Sharon Springs and then in the third round to Quinter. After losing two rounds it was a pleasant surprise to learn Hoxie placed first. Coming in third was Sharon Springs, and in second Goodland. Hoxie’s top two high scorers were Matt Diercks with 100 points, and Sam Bretz with 70 points.
“It was a good tournament where all the members participated and scored. It was a great way to start off the season and I wish them more success,” said Coach Jackie Campbell.
Their next tournament for middle school will be on Feb. 16 at Oberlin.
