SCHOLARS BOWL HEADED TO STATE
The Hoxie High School Scholars Bowl team traveled to Satanta for the Division I Regional Scholars Bowl Tournament on Feb. 2. The team consists of one senior Tabor Rucker, three juniors Skyler Denio, Connor Depenbusch, Noah Smith, and two sophomores Orlando Rivera and Darion Meyer. The team was looking to qualify for State Scholars Bowl. Only the top three teams would advance.
The competition was round-robin made up of ten teams: Hodgeman County, Ingalls, Kinsley, La Crosse, Satanta, Otis-Bison, Greeley County, Quinter, Stockton, and Hoxie. Hoxie ended the rounds of competition with six wins and three losses, to La Crosse, Satanta, and Hodgeman County. Skyler Denio was the high scorer with 130 points, Tabor Rucker came in second with 100 points, and Darion Meyer in third with 60 points.
At the conclusion of the round robin, Hodgeman County was undefeated and placed first. Satanta lost only to Hodgeman County and placed second. Hoxie and Ingalls both tied for third place with each having six wins. According to KSHSAA rules, ties are broken by determining which team won by points during the round in which they met. Hoxie beat Ingalls 60 to 30; therefore Hoxie placed third and is heading for State.
The State Tournament will be held Feb. 13 at Goessel High School. It is a IA Division I championship tournament. This will be Hoxie’s third year in a row to compete at the state level.
