WINTER ACTIVITIES KEEP FFA CHAPTER BUSY
Three of Hoxie’s FFA members competed in Norton on Feb. 9 in Agricultural Sales and Job Interview Career Development Events. These students were junior Taylore Schamberger, and sophomores Devynn Snicer and Skyler Denio. All three students competed in Job Interview, in which students create a situation applying for a job that they could actually apply for in real life. They submit a cover letter and resume and then participate in a job interview. Devynn and Skyler competed in Ag Sales, in which competitors perform customer relations and create a situation for a sales pitch. Devynn chose to sell cuties and Skyler sold an equestrian riding helmet. Devynn placed 5th and received a medal. The team placed fifth overall.
The Hoxie FFA students enrolled in the Plant and Animal Science class competed in the Vet Science CDE (Career Development Event), which was held on Feb. 12 in Hoxie. The contest was composed of a 50 question test, a ten-question math section and 50 identification pictures. Placing and receiving medals were Brynn Niblock (2nd) and Skyler Denio (6th). The team placed third, which earned them a plaque. The team members included Skyler Denio, Brynn Niblock, Wade Niermeier, Katelyn Reitcheck, Breanna Slipke and Devynn Snider.
Three students were involved in Selection Day which Hoxie hosted on Feb. 12. Seniors Breanna Slipke and Connor Katt entered their SAEs (Supervised Agricultural Experiences) to be considered for district winner in their proficiency area. SAEs require students to keep records on their jobs throughout their high school career and fill out a long application. Breanna’s proficiency area was in Agriculture Education and Connor’s was in Agricultural Mechanics and Fabrications. Both won district and will now move on to state to be considered against the other district’s winners. Sophomore Skyler Denio ran for a district office and had an interview as part of the slating process. Skyler was slated for either Treasurer or Secretary with one other student from Hays. They will give speeches at district banquet (April 23) and delegates from all over the district will vote for how to fill the positions.
On Feb. 25 four students traveled to Goodland to participate in the Agricultural Mechanics CDE. The team consisted of seniors Josh Heim, Connor Katt, Wade Niermeier and Tanner Smith. While at the contest they competed in five divisions including electricity, welding, carpentry, surveying and diesel mechanics. Connor Katt placed 9th as an individual in welding and 8th as an individual in electricity.
